What is DMARC?
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) is an email authentication protocol that combines SPF and DKIM checks into a unified policy. DMARC tells receiving servers what to do with emails that fail authentication - reject, quarantine, or just monitor.
DMARC policy levels
DMARC offers three policy levels: none (monitoring only - emails are delivered but reports are received), quarantine (unauthenticated emails are sent to the spam folder), and reject (unauthenticated emails are completely rejected). It is recommended to start with none, monitor reports, and gradually move to reject.
Why is DMARC essential for email marketing?
Google and Yahoo since 2024 require DMARC from all senders sending more than 5,000 emails per day. Without DMARC, your campaign emails may be rejected or end up in the spam folder. DMARC also protects your domain reputation from phishing attacks.
DMARC reports
DMARC allows you to receive aggregate reports (rua) about email authentication results. These reports show which servers send emails on behalf of your domain and whether they pass SPF and DKIM checks. This is invaluable information when diagnosing delivery problems.
